B1105 on Fiat — Immobiliser and power steering lights on with a stiff steering wheel

Code B1105 reports an invalid signal from the physical key. On the Fiat 500X 2.0 Multijet the engine cranks but will not start, and when the key is removed the engine and ignition stay live, after which the steering stiffens.
